Well Goose has made his picks. So I figure its time to make mine. I am actually looking forward to watching the Oscars tonight for a change (thanks Jon Stewart). Here are my predictions from the first week in January and I think I am pretty much sticking with those.
Best Picture: Capote, loved the message of Brokeback but just cause it pushes the boundaries of middle America doesn't make it the best movie of the year. Made from a short story and felt like they ran out of material to work with. Made it too long. Good movie for sure not better than Capote though.
Best Director: David Cronenberg (A History of Violence), the emotion, tension, and of course directing was unbelievable.
Best Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote), this is a shoe in, anyone else and Hoffman gets robbed.
Best Actress: Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line)
Best Supporting Actor: George Clooney (Syriana), time to educate the people about how things really work in the Oil business, this was one great movie.
Best Supporting Actress: Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain), Maria Bello in A History of Violence is amazing as well. If it was based on cuteness Weisz is a shoe-in.
Best Original Screenplay: Paul Haggis and Robert Moresco (Crash), would talk about Matchpoint had I seen the movie. Crash's themes were good in my opinion--anything that tackles race and class in America gets bonus points from me.
Hopefully Hollywood takes notice of the high quality and social messages presented by all the nominees and stops inundating us with crap movies like Son of the Mask, The Dukes of Hazzard, and Monster-in-Law.

Don't you think it annoys David Cronenberg that he made a movie named Crash a couple years back which was very controversial and recieved no acclaim. Then a softball simplified stereotype exploiting movie like 2005's Crash takes best picture? It annoys me.

I loved Brief History of Violence though thought it was a very good movie (one of the best of the year).
I don't want to come off as a Crash lover per se I just didn't find it as awful as some of my esteemed blogger friends thats all. I think you right on by saying that David Cronenberg has got to be annoyed...I sure would be.
There were alot more films deserving of best picture. I liked Capote better and I even enjoy Brief History of Violence and Syriana more than Crash. Hell I probably would have loved Good Night and Good Luck more, just never got around to seeing it.
Regardless keep up the great work at Palmsout you post top notch stuff.
