As I try and compose those cliched year end lists that every blogger feels is her or his duty to compose I realize just how much good shit came out in 2006. The genre of Hip Hop alone was huge this year. After a pretty weak 2005 hip hop came back strong. I would argue it could have been even bigger if some of the heavy hitters actually made good records (I'm looking at you Outkast, Jay-Z and Nas).
I haven't completed my list yet, but am working on it. Also got some mixing software and have been trying to create a year end mix...we'll see how that works (don't hold your breath).

Dude, I am struggling hard to get the list down. I have like 40 albums so far, that I'm trying to get down to 15. F*ck.
It is a tough challenge for us, man. It's like picking your favourite children and telling the rest to go play on the train tracks. FmGT's doing our picks next week, so I cannot wait to crib any last-second notes from you, K, if I forgot any.
And yes, hip-hop came back hard this year. Several long-awaited albums and collaborations finally hit the scene in '06. Will '07 keep the progression going? [Think: New Madvillain, and a collabo between MF Doom and Ghostface in February]

As good of a year that hip hop had in 2006, indie rock had a lousy year. Lots of half-baked albums. Plenty of good songs but few good albums. However, 2004 and 2005 for indie rock was spectactular. So, a drop was expected eventually.
Hmm. Three top picks for me:
The Roots - Game Theory
The Coup - Pick a Bigger Weapon
and for something a bit different, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band - What's Going On. It's a remake of the classic Marvin Gaye album, and is great all round if you like that big New Orleans jazz band sound. The title track with Chuck D is worth a special mention.

the Nas and Outkast albums are more than ok, man.
the expectations were so high everybody feel they put out disapointing LP's but there are Great Tracks on Both albums.
But you're right about Jay-z, his album has a fucking weird feel to it.it's not Baaaaaaad

you are right anon about the outkast album. it did have some awesome tracks. "hollywood divorce" and "the train" were two of my favorites this year.
