FMGT got me turned onto the new Nomo disc. Ubiquity has been lights out so far this year with the release of both Darondo's Let My People Go and Nino Moschella's The Fix. Nomo's sophmore release, New Tones is just as good. In the Breakstra style the Ann Arbor based group creates big beats powered by home-made Detroit electronics and huge horn sections. The result is a big band funk and riotous jazz sound.
URB probably said it best of the New Tones disc, "even in May, Detroit can't possibly be this hot, sweaty and loud... forever funky."

Buy: Nomo's New Tones here. One of the best discs of the year.

Yeah, they are tearing up my speakers this year.
Don't know what it is, but I feel like they're taking that wave started by Antibalas and taking it several steps further. I cannot wait to see them in NYC in August. Cannot. Wait.
Do you like New Tones better than their self-titled debut? For me, the first Nomo album hits a lot harder. New Tones is still great, but it doesn't make me want to dance like a fool like the first one did.
nice post. i've been trying to turn my friends onto nomo to no avail. they just made hideo jokes.
admitadly nordy i havent even heard the first disc! Crime I know. I need to check it out.
JT i totally agree with the antibalas comparison. love antibalas, i just think that nomo might be a bit more party sounding? like they are brining it up to another level. their crazy flair reminds me of konono no. 1 you just cant help but start to get excited and act crazy.
nice jesse nice reference i always am thinking of the tornado hideo when the name comes up. its unforgetabble.
Some members of Antibalas played on the first disc. I had a little post about Nomo about a month ago. Good shit the new one is but the first one ultimatey is a little bit better, just feels more tight and a little more rounded.
